This is to crown their effort for that session with success or failure.

But the thought of writing the exam scares the hell out of them because there is a 50-50 chance of failing and repeating.

To avoid this failure here are the tips on how to get good grades.

But you have to start early and not wait till the last days of the exams.

Easy Tips On How To Study For The Exam

1. Set A Realistic Goal

Why? Because your goal will motivate you to study very well. Without a strong goal, you’ll not put in the most effort.

If you want  5 parallel A’s.Get a piece of paper and list all the courses you’d love to score A’s.

Paste the paper on your bathroom door, close to your mirror, reading table, or anywhere in your room where you can always see it.

I kid you not.  You will study very well to achieve this goal. During my undergraduate days, this was my top secret.

At the beginning of every semester, I always list all the courses I’ll offer and write down the grades I want for each of them.

This prompted me to study with so much seriousness.

I remember when I used to switch off my tv and read my books.

The truth is that when you have a strong goal, you will stay focused and motivated.

2. Don’t Miss Classes

Never miss any of your classes because lecturers give lots of hints and proper explanations in class.

These hints and explanations make your study easy since you’ve already gotten a better understanding during your classes.

But you miss these when you are absent.

Secondly, ensure that you pay keen attention and take notes during the class. If possible, sit at the front where there are fewer distractions

3. Create A Study Area

A study area is an exact place in your room dedicated only for reading, studying and researching.

Most people don’t dedicate a section of their rooms for this purpose.

But this is the one place you need for total concentration.

You can’t read on your bed for a long time without falling asleep because your body is in a place of relaxation.

So create a study area but ensure that it is not positioned to face your bed or television.

Keep a chair you can sit uprightly and also lean your back on.

4. Study Daily, Form Questions And Answer Them

Study every day because the repeated and in-depth understanding of a topic or course guarantees top grades.

Create a question and answer exercise book for each of the subjects you offer.

During my days, I usually use 20-leave exercise books for this purpose.

Read and form questions every day in each of them after attending your normal classes. This is a secret trick on how to study smart.

I guarantee you that 80% of the questions you’ve formed will appear in your exam.

This is one trick that helped me to study smartly for my exams for success.

After setting those questions for yourself, answer each of them till you write your exams.

By doing so, you will be very familiar with the questions and the answers, so the exam will look so simple in your eyes.

This trick works best when you start at the beginning of a semester.

5. Have Your Study Timetable

Create your study timetable. This should be different from your school timetable.

This was my top best among all the tips on how to study for an exam because it prompted me to study at will.

6. Use The SQ3R Method For Comprehension

The ‘S’ Stands for a survey,

Q for Question,

R for reading,

Second R for reciting, and

The third R for review.

The survey is very important as it helps you to know if you’re reading the right book.

To do a proper survey, look at the headings, subheadings, pictures and diagrams in the text. Then ask questions based on the headings and subheadings.

For instance, if the first heading is about Biology, you ask the question, what is the meaning of Biology?

And then read to find out the meaning. Of course, the author will describe it in the main idea, which can be found in the first paragraph.

Then after reading, you recite. Reciting means to say it from your memory without mistakes. As if you are reciting a poem.

And finally, your review. Review means to recall what you had read within 24 hours.

Because failure to review can make you forget half of what you read.

This is an important method on how to get good grades

7. Read And Understand, Don’t Cram

What is cramming? It is the process of repeating information in other to retain it in the brain for use.

But, If you have to choose between cramming and studying, please choose to study.

Cramming is good when you have to retain a password, equation, formula etc.

But cramming a whole notebook to pass an examination makes your brain tired. And as a result, you forget most of the things you crammed.

In addition, cramming can get you beautiful grades but you’ll lose the proper understanding of the course or topic involved.

So study and understand so you can explain as if you are explaining to a 5-year-old child.

8. Use Mnemonics

Mnemonics are short words, letters or abbreviations that can help you to recall.

MR NIGER is a typical example of mnemonics. It helps any biology student to recall the 7 characteristics of living things easily.

It is an effective way of remembering a large amount of information stored in the brain. I can’t overemphasize the importance of this.

The use of Mnemonics is undoubtedly one of the excellent tips on how to study for exams. This contributed greatly to my beautiful grade at school.

I remember when I usually created many of them before the exam. And how they help me with even difficult exams.

9. Get All Your Writing Materials Ready

You can’t go to the farm without your farm implements.

It’s distracting to beg for writing materials in the exam hall. So get all your writing materials in place.

10. Study At Your Peak Hours

Don’t study when you feel sleepy because it will be a total waste of time.

Successful students know their peak time; a time when they enjoy studying.

So know your peak hours. Mine was from 1 to 4 a.m. During this period, everywhere was always calm and my brain was always ready to process and store information fast.

Generally, the wee hours of the day or late at night are the peak study periods for most people. So know yours and work with that.

11. Quit Procrastination and Laziness

Procrastination is the habit of postponing, delaying or leaving an important task that should be done till later.

While laziness means the unwillingness to do something. Procrastination is expensive and can lead to failure.

The truth is that you build your future today by the actions you take.

I linked laziness and procrastination because they both go together.

Quit procrastination and laziness if you want good grades.

Because anxiety sets in when you haven’t studied properly for your exam. And at the time, you begin to cram vigorously just to pass with any grade at all.

Get your notes ready and begin to study every day. Don’t procrastinate and wail till the exam timetable is out.

12. Eat Healthy Meals

Most students make the mistake of snacking on junk food. Research shows that there is a relationship between mental health improvement and healthy eating.

Also, hunger can prevent proper recall during an examination.

As a bonus tip on how to study for an exam, eat lots of brain foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and protein.

A small amount of alcohol can boost your brain’s performance But excessive amounts of it will make you tired as your body will use its energy to break down the alcohol.

13. Get Past Questions

Past questions can help you to know the format of the exam to expect and prepare properly for.

An exam can come in an essay, objective or multiple choice format.

So a past question will help you to discover this so you don’t prepare wrongly.

Also, there is nothing new under the sun. So most lecturers repeat the same questions yearly.

During my days as an undergraduate, I usually studied both past questions and the questions I formed very well. And shockingly, most of these questions were always repeated.

The use of past questions helps you to know the expectation of your lectures and the area to focus on.

Make good use of this asset and get a good grade.

14. Explain to your coursemates

Explaining to your course mate helps you to know if you have properly understood a topic.

It helps you figure out what you didn’t understand and then go back to your note to read more.

Also, it gives you the confidence to walk into the examination hall without fear.

Of course, you won’t be able to explain what you don’t know to your coursemate or examiner.

So gather your coursemates and teach them what you know. Because you get what you want by helping others to get what they want.

Also, give everyone in the group an equal chance to ask and answer each other’s questions.

15. Write Or Draw To Remember

Writing something down on a piece of paper can boost your memorization. This is also applicable to drawing.

When writing, you become aware of some spelling errors and correct them.

Writing also helps you to commit certain words and sentences to the brain and memorize them.

It’s important to practice if your exam will require drawing and labelling. By doing so, you will be able to recall the exact shape and positions to label.

16. Take Short Breaks

Short breaks help your brain to process the information and store it. It clears your head and motivates and energizes you again.

Without this, you get tired and feel sleepy.

Short breaks also take your mind off the book you’re reading to the real world.

So go out and discuss it with your friend or play the piano

But make sure to ask yourself some questions based on your studies. Then get back to your notes if you can’t answer them correctly.

This is one of the 3 special tips and tricks for exams that helped me to get good grades.

17. Sleep Properly The Night Before The Exam

A lot of students always make the mistake of reading all through the night before the exam.

If you are in this habit, please quit. Because it does more harm than good to your grade. You tend to forget what you read when you don’t sleep well.

So get enough sleep after you have brainstormed and recalled a large amount of the topic you studied.

This helps your brain to process and save properly for you to use during the exam.

Proper sleep and relaxation a night before the exam recharge your brain batteries.

18. Get Rid Of Distraction

Nothing takes the place of focus. You have to focus your attention on the exam ahead because where energy flows to the place of attention, then the result follows.

You have to get rid of every form of distraction for that period if you want good grades.

If Clubbing till the wee hours of the morning is your favourite, then stop for this short time and study because the club will always be there, but your exam period will soon be over.

19. Don’t Be Overwhelmed By Your Fear

It’s normal to be afraid because fear is a natural emotion. It is usually felt when we are about to do great things.

Brave students face fear, while cowards run away from fear. So don’t be afraid but write your exams with confidence and hope of getting high grades.

Go in there with your winning mindset.

20. Assess yourself

Assess yourself first before your examiner does.

This allows you to know your learning percentage and boost it if there is a need for that.

And also helps you to get help from your coursemates or predecessors who understand better than you.

Doing this will give you an edge over others who feel pompous to ask questions and get help on time.

So assess yourself every day till you finally sit for the exam.

21. Arrive at the Examination Centre Early

A friend almost missed an important exam because of lateness. And this was due to a traffic jam that met her on the way.

To avoid this, go to your examination centre early. If possible, an hour to the allotted time.

There are many tips on how to study for the exam. Setting a realistic goal for motivation is of great importance. Because if you don’t motivate yourself, no one else will.

In addition to this, we have listed other tips that guarantee success.

But let me also state here that you have to start early at the beginning of the session to practice these tips. Because that is the only way to reap maximum benefits and get good grades.

As I conclude, I want to remind you that there is no shortcut to success. So begin your study early, not at the eleventh hour of the exam.
